The craniosacral approach originated in the early 20th century from the insights of osteopath William Garner Sutherland, a direct student of osteopathy founder Andrew Taylor Still. Through years of meticulous research, Dr. Sutherland discovered the involuntary movement of cranial bones, both relative to one another and in relation to the sacrum.
He understood that this cranial motion is intrinsically linked to the rhythmic activity of deep central structures such as the cerebrospinal fluid, the central nervous system, the membranes surrounding the CNS, the cranial bones, and the sacrum.
This rhythmic fluctuation extends throughout the body via the fascial system—a continuous connective tissue network—producing a subtle, perceptible motion. Due to the plasticity of bone tissue, the micromovements at cranial sutures, and the dural connection between the occiput and the sacrum, this rhythm can be felt by trained hands.
In the broader view of human biomechanics, the craniosacral system—defined in our context as the neuromeningeal chain—forms the deepest functional layer of the body, completing the continuum of myofascial chains and visceral chains already known to impact musculoskeletal balance.
This 6-day course (2 seminars) is designed for healthcare professionals who deal primarily with musculoskeletal and postural dysfunctions. It provides immediate, practical assessment and treatment tools.
You will explore cranial anatomy and physiology, the foundations of cranial and craniosacral biomechanics, and learn to palpate, test, and relate the craniosacral rhythm to clinical findings and whole-body patterns.
By the end of the course, you will be able to conduct a complete craniosacral session, integrating it within a broader treatment framework involving the visceral and musculoskeletal systems.
